The FocalPoints Edge Vault Special Feature represents an important advancement in specialty contact lens design. It allows laboratories to create one or two precise vaults at the edge of a contact lens, helping practitioners manage complex scleral geometries and improve patient comfort.

Addressing Anatomical Challenges

In many patients, conjunctival elevations such as pinguecula can alter the scleral landing zone and interfere with lens fit. Traditional designs may create mechanical interaction at the edge of the lens, leading to discomfort, redness, or unstable wear. With the Edge Vault Special Feature, manufacturers can introduce targeted vaults on the lens edge, allowing the lens to safely clear these elevations while maintaining a stable landing zone. Vaults can be positioned on one or both sides of the lens, making it possible to manage cases such as double pinguecula or asymmetrical elevations. This flexibility enables laboratories to adapt each design to the patient’s unique ocular anatomy.

A New Capability: Reverse Edge Vault

Following an extensive feasibility study driven by customer requests, FocalPoints has introduced a new feature: the Reverse Edge Vault. While traditional vaults remove material to create clearance over conjunctival elevations, this feature addresses a different class of clinical challenges. In rare but significant cases—such as post-surgical outcomes or trauma—patients may present localized depressions or tissue loss near the scleral landing zone. In these situations, adding material at the lens edge can improve contact, stability, and overall fit.

The Reverse Edge Vault enables this controlled addition of material, allowing practitioners to better manage complex ocular surfaces and improve lens comfort for patients with particularly challenging conditions. This functionality will be introduced in the next FocalPoints software release as a free upgrade, extending the clinical versatility of the existing Edge Vault and Dual Edge Vault capabilities.

Combining Standard and Reverse Edge Vaults

Standard and Reverse Edge Vaults can also be combined within the same lens design. This allows laboratories to manage different anatomical features across the scleral landing zone. For example, a standard vault can clear a conjunctival elevation, while a Reverse vault can compensate for a localized depression in another area. Each vault remains independently defined, enabling precise adjustments when fitting highly irregular ocular surfaces.

Always Manufacturing-ready with FocalPoints

From a manufacturing perspective, the Reverse Edge Vault Special Feature reflects Advance Medical’s long-standing approach of transforming insight into practical production tools. The technology integrates directly within the FocalPoints design workflow, allowing laboratories to generate these advanced geometries without altering their existing manufacturing process.

Several leading manufacturers, including AccuLens, Blanchard, and Bausch+Lomb, have adopted this technology within their proprietary design platforms. While each brand maintains its own design philosophy, these lenses rely on the same core Edge Vault technology developed by Advance Medical. By making these capabilities available within FocalPoints, we enable laboratories and practitioners to provide lenses that fit more comfortably, and address the unique needs of every patient.

A Step Forward in Specialty Lens Innovation

The introduction of the Edge Vault Special Feature, and now the addition of the Reverse Edge Vault, represents a meaningful step forward in contact lens design technology. Together, these tools expand the ability of FocalPoints specialty lens laboratories to solve challenging clinical cases and improve the quality of life for patients with complex ocular conditions.

The development of the Reverse Edge Vault represents a meaningful advancement in specialty contact lens technology. This innovation reflects our ongoing commitment to supporting the CL Specialty industry and improving visual outcomes for patients with difficult eye conditions.
